Chapter 4. Supra-organismic bionics (ecological engineering) and bumblebees’ protection

Passive and contemplative approach to the problems of wildlife protection does not give satisfactory results under anthropogenous impact on the natural systems. That is why the necessity of active, constructive and creative measures, i.e.

engineering, is urgently demanded. It is very surprising fact that the bionics (biological engineering), which appeared in I960 in the USA, concentrated its attention and efforts only on the sub- organismic or organismic level. But it is well known that there are many supra-organismic levels in the phenomena of living systems. Basing on the ideas of bionics and TRIZ, it is very tempting to investigate the possibility of developing the supra-organismic bionics. One of the attempts of such approach is the original project of nature reserve of active type BOMBORETUM. It is based on the already known bionomical requirements of bumblebees and their populations. The nesting and foraging capacity are balanced, the foraging zone is organized in space and time in such a way that minimum square gives maximum benefit to bumblebees throughout the whole season.

The same principles can be applied to the traditional nature reserves. It is not enough «just to reserve» some territory to provide the sustainable existence and development of it, especially, if the territory is small. The list of necessary management measures is given to provide reliable protection of the populations of bumblebees and their biodiversity conservation.

These measures are mostly simple and cheap. And it is necessary sometimes not to do something, but do not do something. But it is not easy due to psychological reasons.
